Diversity at GWU?

Hello all!

I am currently nearing the end of my junior year of high school and plan on applying ED to George Washington! I only have one concern, and here it is:
I hear a lot of rumors that GWU is comprised of mainly spoiled, preppy, white kids who like to party a lot, and that there isn't a lot of diversity. To what extent is this true?
The university seems to pride itself on its cultural, racial, and socioeconomic diversity, but there are a lot of posters on this website that would argue otherwise.. Basically, I absolutely love GWU, but I want diversity at the college I end up attending. If I am accepted and attend, will I find multitudes of races, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as students who take pride in their education, or will I find the spoiled, preppy, white kids who couldn't care any less that I've been stuck in high school with for the past three years?

Please only answer if you go here, if your son or daughter goes here, or if you have any other experience with the university. I want informed answers; I'm really serious about this school. Thank you!

OK - short answer - lots of diversty and different groups. Yes, that includes well-off students spending lots. However, I’m sure you will find a compatible group of friends and organizations as there are many.

My “S” is from NC although he’s a city-boy not originally from the South. His core group of friends was made in the 1st 2wks of school - mainly from his dorm. He has friends from CA, Oregon, NY, NJ, VA, TX etc. All of his friends work part-time and are on scholarship.

It all depends on what you are looking for - although I recommend wherever you go - get out and meet other students early as this is when most groups form.

Other options include student orgs, government etc.

Plethora of options.

I don’t think diversity is an issue at GW.

If I remember correctly, over 160 countries are represented in GW’s current student body (you can check this out in the web). Also, all 50 US states, DC, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are represented.

In this year’s applicants, the most representation come from China, Korea, India, England and Turkey (again, check this out in the web).

My S2’s circle of friends includes students from Mississippi, New Jersey, the Philippines, Korea and Poland.

As I said, my S2’s circle of friends come from Mississippi, NJ, the Philippines, S. Korea and Poland.

The student representation from 160 countries, 50 US states, DC, Guam, Puerto Rico the Virgin Islands can be verified from the WEB as well as this year’s applicant pool coming from China, S. Korea, India, England and Turkey. Again, this info. can be readily verified via the WEB.

S2 is loving it @ GW and is not from the northeast!

Be careful responding to sbldaddy - profile says his age is 49! If he’s still attending GW at this age - there’s a problem.

Suspect this individual is trying to inflame and not assist. Unfortunately, we see this on CC forums.

sbldaddy- are you a ■■■■■ from a cross-town rival school? - ha, ha.

Thanks CJ!
