A growing concern of mine is the diversity of University Park. I was accepted, and as a minority it would be nice to have some of the same people around me. I've been surrounded by white people for most of my schooling (which is in no way a bad thing, just want some Filipino friends or people where I am going). I've seen the numbers, but if anyone could give me some insiders opinions on the diversity at the school, that would be awesome. Also, I've read of some racism problems in the past, and is that still a problem? I know it is prevalent everywhere to some extent, but is it a BIG problem at Penn State?

Hm, another diversity thread.

Penn State has alot of white kids. Central PA, go figure.

Dont fret though, there are alot of different minority groups and clubs so there will be always something for you to do if you want to be in contact with people of similar ethinicity.

Haven't heard of many racist crimes recenlty up here. Penn State is pretty strict with their "no policy" and that has cut down on alot of issues with racism as well as LGBT discrimination.

iwag, the numbers don't lie. Remove the athletes and the numbers of minorities really start to drop. My D was accepted for Fall. She's a URM (half-Scandinavian, half-black). Her teachers at HS thought she was Filipino. I wish the numbers were better but as cwryan1 said, University Park is in Central PA, which means it's in the middle of nowhere, not the kind of environment that would attract minorities. Still, I'd feel comfortable if my D decides to go there. A lot more than I would if she went to some other colleges. Like you, my D has been raised in almost exclusively white environments her entire life. She's used to it.

As far as racist incidents go, I'd say this. On a campus with 40,000 students there is bound to be a couple of knuckleheaded racist jackasses. But you'd also find that at UCLA or Berkeley or Michigan or any large school. But I haven't heard of anything recently about PSU.

Racism is everywhere, I hate it, but live with it. I went to a very good public university which was obviously predominantly white, and I'm black, but during football season they would only search me for "a gun or other concealed weapons" and I hung around mainly whites/asians. I'd go in groups of about 10-13 every home football game and every single time they would only search me. I wanted to ask the polices why they would only search me, but already knew the answer.. it's part of life. It's things like racism that keep motivating me to make a difference in the world and succeed.

I got accepted to University Park as well, and I'm Chinese but was born in the Philippines. I'm okay hanging out with any race, but I'm just worried about racism too.

I agree that there is racism everywhere, but the only colors that really matter in state college are blue and white. I never felt like there was much racism on the University Park campus. I had friends of all different races when I was at PSU. It just never really came up as an issue.

LIke I said, with 40,000 students and more thousands of professors, to say there are no prejudiced people at University Park is ludicrous. Of course there are. But there are racists everywhere. But I don't think PSU-UP is any more or less racist than any other school in the Big Ten.

Sillyworld: Don't worry about it. If you are, then consider a politically liberal elite private Liberal Arts College instead, if you can get in. Swarthmore College is ultra liberal. One student there cracked that "everyone knows the Republicans on campus. All three of them." Funny. Unfortunately, Swarthmore is a hell of a lot harder to get into than PSU-UP.

@ Plainsman
I'm not TOO worried about it. But thanks anyways.

If diversity is very important to you, PSU is the wrong school for you.

diontechristmas, don't you have some temple thread to go to? Talk about jealous. You just comb through all the Penn State UP threads insulting the school. Get a life.

jec, I'm not the one who has graduated from college and still posts on a college website...
Don't be a hypocrite.

touche....

"jec, I'm not the one who has graduated from college and still posts on a college website..."

Is that all? It's called college confidential, not current college student confidential. The website is for people looking to attend, attending, of that have attended schools on the site. There are more alums posting on this site than there are current students.

Again, as I said before, just go back to your Temple threads and try to convince people that your school is not a complete ghetto. Your attacking Penn State UP because you couldn't get accepted is getting old.

If diversity is extremely important for you, Im afraid youre in for a bit of shock with relation to which schools you can go to (even HBCUs arent diverse.) However, I am president of one of the NSBE chapter here on campus and I can tell you that youre not really going to have to worry about racism. Of course, there are racists anywhere but Blue and White really are the colors that matter here ;). I would say being on a campus like this is just what you should get used to if you're going to be working in the Northeast (diversity wise).
