Is there a lot of diversity at Vassar? I know the stats are 21-25% of admitted students are of minoritiy groups, but is that true? Is there a lot of interaction between racial groups and do minority students feel isolated?

Number of African-American males in the Class of 2011: 7

Yes, you read that right. It's a statistic my education professor pointed out to us this past week in class.

Vassar trumpets its "diversity." I do believe that they are working to improve it, but I worry about the future of diversity after this year because our Dean of the College, J.J. Jackson, who has worked to promote diversity on campus, is leaving... but Vassar, when it comes to diversity, definitely talks the talk more than walking the walk.

I've seen it go both ways as to interaction between racial groups - it seems to me that people are generally pretty mixed, but I have heard of anecdotes of people only hanging out with people from their home nation, etc. I don't know about feeling isolated, as I am not a minority student. Vassar, as schools go, is tolerant, but don't believe the hype about this being some beacon of pluralism, because there are still a LOT of white boys from Connecticut here.
