Hi! I just got accepted EA to Yale and while it really is my top choice in many senses, the one overbearing factor I have to consider is the sense of community.
I’m an African American female and while I know I’d benefit from and enjoy being around people from all over the world, I also wanted to still feel a sense of community from a cultural club or association of some sort.
Does anyone know about the presence of Yale’s black student union/association on campus?
@Tperry1982 will undoubtedly check in, but if I’m not mistaken, she has a couple feet of snow to deal with :). She attended Yale, as her daughter does now.
I’m Caucasian, but I can tell you that Yale will provide a very diverse student body.
Here is a link to the AACC @ Yale http://afam.yalecollege.yale.edu/ but best recommendation would be to attend Bulldog days or arrange a campus visit to get a real feel for your personal comfort level at Yale.
Percentage-wise, AA students hover around the 8-10% of the student body. When I was there in the mid-late 80s, four of the traditionally black frats/sororities had decent numbers of members. TPerry has told me that this has decreased however. Yale has a pgm designed for students to acclimate to campus. I went and had a blast (back in the day) and made some lifelong friends.
@EsylaR - Hi!! Welcome to Yale. Yes, as @IxnayBob stated, I am an AA graduate of Yale in 1982 and my D is a junior there now. As @T26E4 also stated, AA students are about 8% of the population, been that way since I was there. Yale is a very inclusive place, but it is really hard to put that concept into words. Would love to talk to you and if you are going to Yale for a visit, I can get you in touch with my D who can take you around. Believe it or not, there are now Black Greeks on campus (if that is your interest). Also, google Black Solidarity Conference at Yale, a yearly conference where students of color from around the country come to dialogue about issues pertinent to our community, network with recruiters from some of the largest companies and to have a great time. There is also the Afro American Cultural Center where student organizations are housed and where it just a place to go and recharge when larger Yale becomes overwhelming (as it does for every student at times).
Again, send me a PM and we can exchange info so we can talk. My D will be home until January 15 so she can talk to you too. I am so excited for you!! Welcome again!!
Congrats. I am a parent. We toured (me/ son) over the Summer. Our guide was an African American male (bio major … I think). Your question was asked by an African American mom (I think she had a daughter). Anyway, he seemed very happy with the overall environment, including the mix of students. One data point.
