Such an essay is asking you about ** How ** not * what * you will bring to UW to add diversity. Talk about what you will do at UW.
I most certainly would NOT talk about a “defensive” personality.
Remember, the point is to get your application accepted, not True Confessions.
Admissions already has your demographic info. Insofar as possible, use these 300 words to bring out something about your own personality and values, in the context of remarking on how you would contribute to their community’s diversity. Perhaps use experiences you’ve already had in your high school community as a jumping-off point. Offering a glimpse of your sense of humor can be good too - just don’t be too subtle or you run the risk of people not getting it.
Diversity isn’t just religion or skin color, it’s also in the foods you know how to cook and the philosophies in your head and the music you like.
Do you have a culinary specialty that you think many other kids won’t ever have tasted? Do you have a favorite tenet of Islam that you think most Americans haven’t heard of or don’t understand? Do you have special ways of folding your hijab, or a fabulous collection of different hijabs?
You don’t have to a lot of words, so pick something specific and interesting and describe it fully.
