Bless you for this update.

^
Took the words right out of my mouth

Just referencing each college page for my daughter’s choices - fantastic info!

thank you so much for compiling this; what a fantastic resource!!! If you were totally ambitious or a saint (!) you could add a line to the schools which consider factors other than race for their diversity criteria – some are looking for low income, first gen or even geographical diversity well as ethnicity. Again, this is a great compilation!

Thank you for this great post. Every little bit helps…

dckdck, this can turn out to be much more than a little help. One of my kids has applied for quite a few fly-ins at selective colleges. So far she’s been accepted to half. The average length of the events is 3 days & nights all expenses paid. If she gets accepted even one more of the other programs, the cost of these programs - just what we would have paid for airfare and hotel for equivalent visits, not counting all the entertainment, education, hospitality, food etc. – is more than she could have earned working a full time job all summer. Other amazing aspects are 1) the students get a real boost for their app’s with admissions and financial aid workshops during the event 2) they get to know admissions counselors and faculty who can vouch for them during admissions process 3) they get a real experience of what it’s like to live and study at C
ollege X which helps them in their own decision making process and 4) meeting a group of peers who are in same position and can be a source of information and mutual support during the stressful college admissions…I can’t say enough about the incredible value of these opportunities for under resourced students. Here’s a telling statistic: for students who attend Windows on Williams (Williams College’s diversity program offered twice each fall) odds of admission goes from 17% to more than 70%.

OP, you could add “Taste of Carleton” at Carleton College, Northfield Minnesota: [Carleton College: Admissions: Taste of Carleton: Fall 2013](http://apps.carleton.edu/admissions/visit/TOC/)
MSAP fall weekend at Pomona College, Claremont CA: [MSAP Fall Weekend - Pomona College](Perspectives on Pomona (POP) | Pomona College in Claremont, California - Pomona College)
these are both for ALANA, first gen and low income

Just noticed the deadline for WOW at Williams has passed - ugh!

These programs are not just for “Under-resourced” kids. We have a family friend, whose family is high income, she goes to a typical suburban school, she has high ACT scores and happens to be Hispanic. She has accepted several solicitations to attend these free fly-in programs. She doesn’t have enough time in her schedule to go to all of them that she was invited it.

Glad, this has been a helpful post. Honeybee thanks for adding Carelton and Pomona.

Students who are accepted to these program do get the “actual feel” of the school which sometimes enables them to decide if they like big or small schools, rural/urban … the list goes on.

They also develop and sometimes sustain relationships from these programs. Though my kids did not matriculate to any of these schools that offered the fly-in programs. They enjoyed immensely all that the programs they attended offered and have sustained some great friendships.

@MidwesternHeart, I am not sure any one mentioned that these were for “Under-Resourced” kids. It is actually for “Under-Represented” I am sure there is a variety of SES kids who fall under that umbrella as it relates to African American, Hispanics, Asians and Native Americans.

BTW_ Congrats to your kid honeybee on the acceptances thus far.

BIG Thanks to Entonmom for the sticky on the AA Resource thread!

Son was notified of his selection to the fly in program last night. Today they will send the information for making travel plans. Does anyone know if they pay for a parent to fly with the student?

I know one college will. Was it Colorado College? If my memorry serves me correctly. But I really think they want the kids to come independent of their parents. Where will the parent be housed during the students stays.

My dd has done one of these programs already. She went to UNC/Chapel Hill in May & loved it. She was accepted to the WOW/Williams program and is applying to a few more. Too bad more of these aren’t offered in the spring of junior year. It’s a lot to have the kids traipse all over for several weekends during their all important senior year.

Congrats to your son redriding. As NHCTMOM mentioned, I believe Colorado College does.

However, this is a time for your kids to bond with others, so shorten the leash a bit for them to go and explore by themselves

I’ve gone to a couple of programs (and been rejected from a couple of others…so don’t fret if you don’t get in, it is a reality check and ‘learning experience’ according to my family!).

Anyway…I think it is better to go without parents when the colleges are paying for just student and most students are coming alone. It really lets you see how you feel about traveling and navigating things on your own. I mean, frankly, if you hate it or have a hard time doing it for a weekend trip when EVERYTHING is arranged for you and there is a ton of help…well, then you might want to re-think the idea of going far for college. My parents went to one with me, did not go to the other. The later one had be a bit nervous, frankly. But I came back with a lot of confidence in my ability to analyze the schools on my own and my ability to travel alone (I had gone to ‘camps’ alone, but had not fully traveled alone to a place I had never been with no one I know).

Also, I agree with NHavenCTmom…this is a HASSLE to try and apply for and travel to these this fall. I’ve got a winter term sport so I don’t know if I can do any the are in Nov. and beyond and even this fall it is a hassle.

Thankfully, the 2 I have been to were late summer. As much as I’d like one of the fall ones, it will be tough to juggle with school, the ACT/SAT coming up, etc. Junior year would have been a much better time for these.

HSG

I know that the following only pay for the student: DIVOH (Amherst) and WOW (Williams), Explore Bowdoin, Taste of Carleton, Discover Middlebury and MSAP at Pomona (I’ve named the programs in case there’s more than one associated with a school). Most of the colleges explain that they want to make the experience available to as many students as possible and therefore use all funding for students rather than including any parents. I’m sure that for reasons of independence etc. mentioned above, it is advantageous for the students to attend without a parent, and I have been thinking that it in our family’s case it will be interesting for my D to form her opinions of the schools completely away from me. Our kids can read our moods and know how we are feeling even when we try to not to influence them, so whether your child is more inclined to go along with your views or oppose them, they will probably have more authentic responses to a college without your presence - at least that is true in our family.

I agree w hsgrad and NHCTMom that this semester could not be worse timing for these visits. D is busiest ever with 5 AP’s, fall varsity sport, music commitments, ACT & SAT, college app’s and scholarship app’s due, etc. and will be missing quite a bit of school for these visits. But they are too valuable to miss, and I’m sure she’ll be glad eventually.
Probably colleges don’t feel they could ask students to travel alone and take on the kind of responsibility these visits require as juniors, thus the senior year scheduling.

In any case they represent a wonderful opportunity and I’m hoping the visits will help all invited students to prioritize their college lists, learn valuable info about the application process, make great new friends (as learninginprog shared), and even get an admissions boost to a favorite college.

Add to the list Dartmouth’s Native Fly-in Program, thought they have not listed dates:
[Dartmouth College Native Fly-In Program](<a href=“Home | Native American Program”>Home | Native American Program)

My daughter has been invited by both Tufts and Oberlin to apply for their programs. She will probably also apply to the one at Middlebury - so exciting!
