Son needs diversity GE 1 or 2. Probably will take a GE1 this summer but they offer no diversity GE 1 or 2 this summer.
Next fall there are only 2 classes of GE2 that are diversity. They are given only when he has engineering classes offered one time slot only.
How are you supposed to get your diversity requirement done if they offer so few classes each semester and they are all 9-10 Tu Thurs?

Did you talk to your advisor to try to petition to get the diversity class taken care of this summer given the time schedule conflicts? Ask USC advisor for a solution. Did you check all of the diversity classes? I think they have a gm attached. My son did the diversity in Cat. 6. Did you check Cat. 6? Depending upon your son’s major, I think the Engineering dept. allows you to take an extra Cat. 6. Read the fine print in the Viterbi catalogue and see if you can find where it says you can take an extra Cat. 6.

I checked the summer courses. One looks like a Cat. 6 (sociology). The other is probably also Cat. 6 (could it be Cat. 1-CTCS class on film?). I suggest that you sign up for one of the two Cat. diversity classes listed and take the other GE class pass/not pass if possible.
My understanding from the catalogue is you can take one GE class pass/not pass. Would this solve your problem? GE 1 and 2 look like a lot of work.

Consider taking diversity at a community college over the summer. Or even concurrent with the USC semester.

He is going to ask his advisor. There would not be a problem to take a non GE as a diversity class for an elective, but his schedule has no electives except tech electives for the four years. He already had a category 6 because this is required freshman year with writing. Unfortunately, his advisor did not tell him to make it a diversity class.
Only one diversity out of two offered this summer is a GE and he doesn’t need a GE6.

Category VI: Social Issues
GEOG 257g Environment and Ethics
IR 101xg International Relations
POSC 220g Critical Issues in American Politics
SOCI 142 gm Diversity and Racial Conflict

Is it really that tight that cat-2 GE has to be taken this fall? It’s not a prereq to anything. I would just take another major course and take the cat-2 GE in a later semester.

Also, there are cat-1 diversity courses this fall (HIST 102gm and 200gm), if those don’t conflict, you could take a cat-2 GE this summer and one of the cat-1 diversities this fall.

Are you sure that the diversity class is required for the CS Games major? Under the GE requirements for the Games major there is a star asterick alongside Writ 140 which says,
“Concurrent enrollment in a Social Issues GE is required”. Also, says alongside GE Cat. 4, “May enroll in a Category 1,2,4 or 6 GE class”. Your son’s advisor is supposed to write up a 4 year plan to include everything to graduate on time. Where did the advisor include the diversity course in the 4 year plan? It sounds like your son’s program is full to the brim without time for the diversity course during the year. Maybe your son can petition to remove the diversity class (if it is required) because the advisor did not get him the right diversity class connected with the Writ. 140 freshman year. What do you think?

All majors have to have diversity

How about taking GE2 this summer and GE1/diversity in the fall (Hist 200 is M/W…it is at 8am, but I’ve heard it’s a good class, and if he takes it P/F he won’t have to stress too much)

Also, he should be able to take a GE at USC and a diversity class at a local CC during the summer and finish the last GE next semester. This is probably the best option.

Thanks for everyone’s help. He had missed the history class that is the diversity-probably because it is an 8 am class. He will change things around and take a category 1 this summer and the 2m in the fall. He then only has one elective and 2 tech electives.

He has found the GE people very unflexible. For instance he has two different course credits 8 total for upper level spanish from when he spent time living in mexico and taking classes. They won’t count that as diversity. Also, they will count the Psychology of Laughter but not general Psychology as a GE. Go figure

They will probably cancel the religions of latin america class this summer since no one signed up except him. The class was going to meet 10-4 twth
