I'm a junior from northern virginia who has been spoiled by the diversity of the washington DC area. I was actually born in Iowa, and thought it would be cool to go back for college where i was born and lived for two months. I am a little scared about diversity, but I have heard that it is a very accepting school. I still see however that it is only 3% asian...which is very scary. What do you guys think about University of Iowa and diversity...

My California D has been at Iowa for a couple of years – her network of friends is pretty diverse from many perspectives. The number of out of state and international students has been growing rapidly at Iowa in recent years.

Not what you’d find in a large metropolitan area, but more diverse than you might expect in Iowa. Hopefully you can visit and see for yourself. There are also reports available on the Iowa Registrars page to get an idea of the diversity represented by the student body.

thank you
p.s. nice user name haha

Both the University of Iowa and Iowa City transcend the state of Iowa; the university is hardly a snapshot of the state (IMHO), although Iowa is a state that highly values education (and besides, I did not mean that as a negative).

keep in mind that UIowa is not your typical state university. Iowa City is pretty far east in the state of Iowa. As such, the hinterland of the university spreads well east of the Mississippi, areas not in the state.

Iowa is the only public B10 school where in-state enrollment (at least at the freshman level) is below 50%. You simply cannot look at the nature of the UIowa and miss the tremendous influence of suburban Chicago on the school…just like you can’t look at Chicagoland’s better high schools and realize that UIowa is very much a part of their culture (believe me…you’ll be inundated with Hawkeye wear wherever you look).

If there is any school comparable to Iowa in this out-of-state connection, it would be the Univ of Oregon. Oregon’s connection with California is similar to Iowa’s connection with Chicago.
