I was going to write about how I've tried to balance my parents' very different culture (Mexican/Korean) throughout my life, but someone told that it was pretty cliche and that I should write about a specific experience instead. My dad got a DUI last summer and I had to post bail myself. It was definitely a learning experience, but is it appropriate for a college essay? Any thoughts/comments welcome.

Seem’s like am amazing idea. You didn’t break the law, and you get to experience the justice system. A very unique experience I think few people on this forum will have.

Why not write both and see what essay turns out better.
I personally find the Mexican/Korean thing much more interesting. It’s about you, your identity, and personal experience from it.

OP, I know somebody that their son wrote the dads DUI, it was a very compelling essay. He got into MANY top schools.

I don’t know of course, but IMO, many people can write on cultural diversity whereas writing about your experience with your father is much more unique. JMO
