Diversity or Specification?

Do colleges like to see a diverse student who takes AP subjects equally in every area, or would they prefer to see a student who knows where they're going in life, and take classes pertaining to that area.

For example I want to be a genetecist, and the dillema I'm having is what to choose for my 3rd AP class (taking AP Calc AB and AP Chem for sure). For my 3rd I will take either AP Lit or AP Physics C (which my AP Bio teacher really thinks I should). So would the college prefer me to be well rounded and take AP Lit, or dedicated to future studies and take AP Phys C. Please don't use the "take which one you're more interested in" comment. My intrest in the 2 is about equal (tilted ever so slightly toward physics). Which will impress colleges more?

I'm no expert, but I can tell you right off that different colleges will have different answers to your question. Most admissions officers, from my experience, would say choose which one you want to learn about. I would choose both if I could.

^ I can't choose both, one or the other

An admissions counselor at UVA told me if I had to choose between AP Physics and AP Calc (along with 3 other APs- Span, Eng, and Euro) she'd go with the Calc because I hadn't previously had a math AP (did the offered honors all throughout high school) but had already taken an AP Science (Chem). She also basically told me I wouldn't get in if I didn't take Physics, but I went with AP Enviro and AP Calc and got in soo...

It's so hard, jbruner is right. I think anyone you ask would give you a different answer. I imagine you'd have some colleges wanting the English and some impressed by two AP Sciences at once. Sorry I can't help more!

Anyone have a similar situation to mine in the past? What happened how did it turn out? Or just any other opinions would be great!

I'd take whichever one is harder at your school (as long as you can still get a good grade). Lit and Physics are the 2 hardest classes at my school, but one might be harder than the other at yours. Too bad you can't do both.

Stick with English Lit. Colleges expect four years of English, and taking it at the AP level is best.

I suspect Physics C would require more work than usual since you haven't had calculus before.

any other thoughts?
