Hey everyone,

So I know this forum isn't always very active, so hopefully I'll get a response. I'm working on the short answers for the Caltech application. I've come to the "diversity" question, and I'm stuck about what they are looking for. Are they referring specifically to racial diversity, or diversity in a broader? This is the only one I've had trouble with so far.

What do you guys think?

Hi rkepp12! Nice to see that you’re starting early on the application! Since I last completed the application ~2 years ago, you’re going to have to remind me of the full question before I could provide an answer.

@chewydog Here is the question posted on the application:

“In an increasingly global and interdependent society, there is a need for diversity in thought, background, and experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. How do you see yourself contributing to the diversity of Caltech’s community?”

I’m sure it’s intended to be broad, but I’m not sure whether they are looking for racial diversity, or some other kind of diversity…thanks in advance!

I recall interpreting the question as: Granted that everyone who is accepted and attends this school is academically intelligent, what makes you interesting? Besides physical appearance, how would someone be able to distinguish you from another Techer who is studying the same option/major as you? Keep in mind that this uniqueness can stem from cultural influences, creative outlets, and peculiar hobbies among other things. Racial diversity is not at the top of the list of priorities for admittance into Caltech, to be honest with you. Be open and creative, but don’t forcefully portray yourself in a manner that you are not. If you fear that you are boring, list all the activities you enjoy and different pieces of information about you (no matter how trivial you may find them) and we can work from there.

@chewydog. That helps a lot, thank you! I now have a few ideas for that prompt. It was the one I was having most trouble with out of all of them. Thank you again!
