Diversity / What R The Students Like?

USD seems to be a very good fit for me.

The only thing I am concerned about are the students.

I am a relaxed, liberal Christian looking for a diverse school.

The catholic jesuit schools seem to be diverse and very open minded. however, usd is catholic, but not jesuit.. How is USD?

How many athiests attend? Is it diverse? (ethically, wealth wise, religious, everything..)

Basically,.. what are the students like?

And how does it being a catholic institution affect the college?

thanks!!

liberal christian haha.

…

well for a brief explanation haha…

i think its okay to be gay
aboriton is ok in most situations
i believe in the interpretation of the bible
obviouslly evolution is true…
christianity isnt about rules, but about gods love / forgiveness

just whatnot like that.

im not sure where your from buddy, but basically in my area lots of people have the same views as me.

OP -

I’m pretty sure USD is diverse. From the religiously affiliated schools that I’ve looked at, most are pretty liberal. Pepperdine is the only pretty strict one that comes to mind.

I’m from Florida, a gay male, Atheist, looking at some California schools. I’ve looked at Jesuit schools such as: USF (San Fran.), Loyola Marymount, and Santa Clara.

My top two choices are USF and LMU, both which are located in extremely diverse cities. Loyola is in Los Angeles. I talked to a guy who runs the Gay-Straight Alliance at LMU and I’m told, he’s never witnessed discrimination, which raises my confidence in that going to the school, I will be fine, despite who I am contridacting the beliefs of some people ;)

By the way, a lot of the Jesuit schools have beautiful campuses.

kk thanks for the feedback! yaa im planning on applying to lmu and scu. well, i know the jesuit unis are pretty good with diversity and stuff. thats why i was wondering about USD, cus its not jesuit.

any more feedback about USD anyone?

To me, Jesuit is just a title. Just because it isn’t Jesuit doesn’t mean it’s not diverse.

ya ya, i agree.

so… not getting much info about USD.

what are the students like?? diverse? & how does the catholic identity of the college affect the students??

thanks

Daughter goes to USD. We are Catholic. I would say that USD is probably one of the most “relaxed” Catholic schools. It IS Catholic, though, so definately different than a public school.

I would not say that the student population is very diverse, though. A fair amount of Hispanics since you are in So Cal, but overall, student population is very wealthy, regardless of ethniticity.

yeah. ok thanks BayAreaCAMom. how does your daughter like it there?

DD loves it there - what’s not to love - gorgeous, resort like campus, fantastic weather in a beautiful city on a BEACH! there are a lot of wealthy blondes running around that school, though. but, everyone finds there own niche, and everyone is pretty happy there

also, this is true for every Catholic school - the Catholic Church does NOT think abortion is OK, and there are a lot of “rules” in the church. I would say that most Catholic universities do not push their religion on you at all, but you have to understand that the core fundemental teachings of the church are the foundation of the school.
