diversity

what are some good colleges that have lots of diversity?
preferably in the south

oh wow, great question

Diversity in what? In the political spectrum? In ethnicity? In religion? In regions? In the types of video games played? In the type of kinky sex people are into?

Before expecting good answers one must prepare a good question.

I infer his question to mean ethnic/racial diversity.

University of Houston
Florida International University

University Of Alabama-Birmingham
University Of Miami
Wesleyan College (all girls school in Georgia)

Rice, UF.

Is the southern thing important? There are tons of diverse schools in the country.

In terms of racial diversity and mixing, JBHE commended:

Duke
Emory
Vanderbilt
UNC
UVA
Rice

In terms of socioeconomic diversity (% of Pell grant recipients), JBHE commended:

Vanderbilt
UNC
UVA
Duke
Rice
Wake Forest

If you look here, UVa is nearly at the bottom of the list. Duke and Rice aren’t doing well, either.

IBclass06, I think you may need to hand over your credentials.

Hey, they’re not MY lists.

At least Duke and Rice have more PGs than Princeton and are on par with Yale. ;)

University of Florida

Lol, no way. I can name three schools in Florida more diverse than UF. FIU, USF and UMiami.

UMiami and UAB are the most diverse schools in the south

Actually University of Houston is.

Maryland, then again its not really in the south.

In terms of racial diversity, I would encourage you to also consider the number of minorities in leadership and teaching positions. Also consider if the deparment(s) you are planning to study is diverse, not only in terms of race, but also in terms of academic background and research/published material/etc. Additionally, if diversity is important to you, then you should also consider the support system that’s in place. If you have specific target schools, seek out different types of students and ask about their experience at the school, if they would encourage you to attend, etc. Regardless if a school is or is not diverse in a statistical sense, statistics won’t tell how the students interact with each other, if it’s a comfortable or tense atmosphere, etc

does George Mason count as a southern school?

Considering that Mason is about 20 mins outside of DC, I would say no…
