My daughter was offered a spot on a D2 field hockey team, we are just waiting to hear about scholarship amount. Are there any parents/players who play a D2 sport that can give examples of scholarship amounts so we have an idea of what to hope for? Thanks!
Every school does them differently. You’d have to know if the sport is fully funded (with 6.3 scholarships) at your school. Then you’d need to know if the school has a full roster (ave. 24) and if the coach splits the scholarships evenly, per class, gives more to jrs and srs and less to freshmen and sophs, gives full scholarships to some and nothing to others, gives at least book money to everyone or a small amount ($2000) to everyone.
Some coaches weigh the athletic scholarship against the merit scholarship. If the coach knows your child will get a big merit award, coach might hold back some funds for a student who won’t get enough in merit. My daughter has a bigger merit scholarship than athletic grant, and also gets some state money that other players don’t get, and the coach knows it.
As a freshman, she got about 1/2 of her tuition in athletic grant. As tuition rose, the athletic grant didn’t so now it about 1/3 tuition, even though it is the same amount in dollars. The math is really complicated. The award can be a percentage or a set dollar amount for tuition, room and board, or books. A percentage might be better as if costs rise, so does your aid.

Note that the average scholarship for D2 is about $6000, but that’s average for ALL sports and at all schools that offer FH.
Thank you. I am hoping to have more information from coach in about a week or so. I am anxious, and hoping it is enough. If not, we need to have DD looking at some alternatives!
Run the NPC so you’ll know what to expect from the non-athletic part of her award and what you’ll need from the coach to make it work for you.
Good idea…thanks.
It does vary so greatly - my daughters coach told her she gives all her scholarship money to her upper classmen – I am not sure if that means only Jr and Sr or if that means Sophmores too but it defnitely means no freshman! She wanted to play (she is also D2 in lax) and she got decent academic merit so we are looking at whatever she gets whenever she gets it from LAX as a bonus.
Several coaches seem to do that. ^^^ It unfortunately didn’t work out for us and we had to let that school go. We needed the money!
The coach we are talking to did not mention anything about Upper Classmen, but we also still haven’t heard anything. I am expecting early this week. In the meantime we are looking at another school over April vacation as a back up plan.
