Division Manager says he'll follow up then ignores my email

I was selected as an alternate candidate for a very specific internship at a large corporation and the division manager said he would follow up with me on my application. The selection pool was narrowed down to just me and the primary candidate. That was 3 weeks ago. (This is for a Fall Internship)

After 2 weeks I sent him an email re-affirming my interest and asking him if there were any press releases or online documents I should investigate to supplement my understanding of the workings of the company as I research the scope of my potential duties independently.

This isn't the first time this has happened to me. The owner of a smaller but well-connected firm gave me his phone number and his business email so I could contact him if I was interested in an internship. I contacted him last week and still have not gotten a response. (This is for summer internship)

I thought emails got followed up on after 3 days at most. I'm thinking of paying the businesses a visit personally to see what happened, the only thing that makes me hesitant about it is that it is a 12 hour drive. I hope they did not flake on me. All I want is a response. Is that too much to ask?
