Divorced parents and tax returns--help!!

My parents are divorced and I live with my mom who has custody of me. But because there are two siblings, and my father pays child support, my mother splits me and my sister as to who claims us on their tax reports. My father claims me as a dependent and my mother claims my sister. Since my parents have divorced, my mother has remarried and our step father now lives with us.

As far as financial aid goes, whose income matters in deciding how much money I receive. Is it my mom and my step-dad since they have custody of me? Is it my father because he claims me on his tax report? Or is it both the income of the household that I live in in addition to my fathers income? Thanks so much.

It really depends whether you are applying to schools that use FAFSA only or ones that use profile. Who claims you for tax is unimportant.

For FAFSA it is the financial information of the parent you live with the most (and their spouse).

For profile you will the need the financial information of both parents and their
spouses.

Finaid has good information on this and other financial aid matters.
