I'm 17 and a half.
This means I am no longer required to take driver's ed.
My parents wouldn't let me get my permit until now.

I want to get a job in October/ November.
I need transportation to school/ work.

I looked at the DMV form for a hardship license, and I have two problems.

My income is not essential to my family contribution.

It requests employer info. Which is stupid because I don't want to get hired until I know I have a way of getting there.

I want to know if I am still applicable to get a hardship license that will allow me to drive by myself without having to have a permit for 6 months.

My mom is currently paying a college kid $15 a day to take me to school, which is ridiculous. I have no transportation to home/ work after school. I go to private school, there is no public transportation to or from there.

I have to wait anywhere from 2-5 hours after school before I get a ride home. Sometimes I have been left waiting there until even the staff have left. There is no room to explain this on the Hardship License Application.

Thanks guys!!

I’m afraid you’re not :(

sl;dkjfa;slkdja;lsd!!!

That means if I take my permit test next Wednesday I will get my license on January 15th. :(

Which is like a month before my 18th birthday. So it’s totally pointless.
Ughhh. I’m mad that my parents made me wait to get my PERMIT. It’s not like I could drive without them. :/

What do you guys suggest? I’m tired of being stranded at school and not being able to have a job. (I had one last summer, my mom would always get me there 10-15 minutes late and I hated that). I eventually decided just to bike the 9 miles to work… which wasn’t fun considering it was summer and I live in the desert. :/

Only way I can see getting to work would be biking. which would suck to do everyday. It would mean I’d have to get up at like 6 every morning after late night studying for APs, bike for about 30-45 minutes, and then after school bike around 10 miles to get to work.

Can anyone think of alternatives? How fast does a electric bike (kind you can ride on the sidewalk) go? I I recall correctly, Motorcycles allow you to drive by yourself with a permit… I doubt my parents would go for that though. Not like it’s dangerous like driving in New York or anything but still…

What should I do???

There’s not much that you can do at this point. CA has very explicit rules governing driver licenses, and these rules were put in place FOR SAFETY REASONS.

Since you have never driven a car yet, requiring six months of practice driving under the supervision of an adult driver is perfectly reasonable. Otherwise, you would be a serious menace – not only to yourself, but to everyone else on the road as well. It takes at least that long to develop the skills you need to be a safe solo driver.

After you get your license in January, you can get a car. (I assume you have the money for one, since your only issue seems to be getting a license.) That will solve your transportation problem, so you can go out and find a job. And January is just a couple of months later than your original Oct./Nov. time frame.

You biked 9 miles in PALM SPRINGS?!?!?!?!
Oh my god…that sounds horrible

Is there no where with decent pay near your house?

I’d need a place to work near my school in that case. Which would limit me to food service, which I am not down for.

Also, oddly enough, my mom said she’d consider letting me get a motorcycle… sweet.
That would solve my problem and be super cool.

Ha, now I’m jealous of you lol.

lol, don’t be jealous yet. She said she’d THINK about it.
Also my dad, who I don’t live with, isn’t for it as of right now.
This is the dad who wouldn’t let me get a trampoline when I was little because he said I could hurt my head, get brain damage, and end up as a vegetable. LOL

Oh then…good luck. Glad your hopes are up!

UGH. I am soooo confused.

The CA DMV website says you can get your permit for a motorcycle, and says nothing about a 21 year old person with a license riding with you.

I called the DMV to clarify this, because it doesn’t say anything about not having someone with you. The guy at the DMV says I need a car driver’s license first. The DMV website says NOTHING about having a car license first. On the bright side, he did indeed say I could drive alone with a permit. -_-

I’m not very fond of DMV people. Could someone clarify this for me?

I don’t know about CA, but here in Idaho you have to have a drivers license first to drive a motercycle or scooter. I was assuming it was different there. Sorry. :(

So did I. It says NOTHNIG about having a car license in the CA DMV website or CA Motorcycle handbook. But the guys on the phone said you need to have a class C license. I don’t know which is correct.

ahhh. I just figured something out.

To get a motorcycle permit, you only have to 15 and a half. You can’t get your license until you’re 16. Woohoo. DMV phone people are idiots.

Probably the class c license. Do you know anyone with a motercycle? Maybe ask them… Idk…

EDIT: CONGRATS.

DMV where I live does not mean DMV where you live.

Naw, I don’t know anyone.

YES. I GOT MY DAD TO CONSIDER IT!!!

:D

I really hope this happens haha.
And my dad agrees, DMV people are stupid.

Work from home.
Get a paid internship.
Etc.

^lol. I’ll do online surveys. New my spam mail was good for something!
