Do 2 applicants from same HS compete for different Cornell schools?

If one applies to ILR and one applies to, say, Human Ecology, could they both be admitted?

Cornell takes a lot of kids from my school…a few years ago it was like 80.

Anything could happen. What are you trying to gather from answers to this question? ie- will it influence whether you apply? (you should apply no matter what) or do you just want to know? I think that will better guide respondents on how to answer you.

Also, I think that how many students have been accepted from your school in past years (ie- precedent) will be a contributing factor.

From my school I got into CAS and my friend got into Engineering.

So no. You will be automatically rejected.

Of course you can both be admitted. Even if you applied to the same college within Cornell, you could both be admitted.

yeah this is my situation as well. I applied early to CALS and I know another girl in my school applying early to Engineering, and I’m sure there are others. It’s a tad awkward knowing who you’re up against.

As I understand it, admissions at each college is entirely separate. CALS will have no idea who is being considered by Engineering.

No, I am definitely applying no matter what! I was just wondering if it did so that I could brace myself/encourage my friend to apply to Cornell as well.

There are 6 people that came here this year from my high school in Florida (including me). More were accepted, but 6 of us came. Four are in Engineering, one CAS and one HumEc. Don’t worry, you are not competing =)

you’re competing, but not against your own high school. if your friend doesn’t apply, its just one less person among the thousands of applicants to compete with, but then its not significant at all then, so technically you aren’t competing directly.

well, he’s the top student in our grade and i’m not…so it would make me look bad
oh well, i will just look forward to the decision and hope for the best :)

10mwil…i’d say your reasoning applies more to small schools with like a 300student/class enrollment…

cornell is a tad bit larger so it can admit more people…

They have no quota for how many they take from each high school.

I don’t think that is totally true. If high school of origin was not considered I’m sure half the freshman class could be filled up by stuy/ other specializeds/ chicago lab/ Horace Mann.

there is no quota for high schools. its not like they say, “ok we can only take 10 students from Overachiever High School so the 11th applicant and so forth will be automatically rejected”. its about the qualification of the individual students. in my year alone, i know that 6 of us from my hs were accepted early (not sure how many others are attending from RD), with 1 in AAP, 3 in COE, and 2 in CAS.

plus if you and another student are applying to different colleges, those respective colleges will not know about the other student. there is not collaboration in that sense. they wont call each other up and say “hey did you get an applicant from OHS? yea so did i…soo…who are we going to accept and who are we going to reject?”
