Somewhere I heard that to get into a really good school, some applicants pick a major that is not very popular in the school so the applicant gets in, and then changes the major right away to something better. Is this done a lot? And if so, is it advisable?

It really depends on the University youre applying to. Some Universities use a general guideline for all students but sometimes they(or the college the program belongs to) might have a higher criteria to be accepted into their program... aka engineering. Sometimes they accept the students into the university but the college/school may deny them into their program.

I only heard of that happening to only one of my friends (the case youre talking about). She applied to Cornell with one of the most obscure majors and she got in and she tranferred out of her program the next year.

So transferring isnt always easy cause the college in the university might not accept you?

See the thing that happened with your friend is what Im wondering if I should do. Cause if I apply undecided, I have less of a chance of getting into a top school than if I apply with a low key major. So then I can change once Im in. Thats whats on my mind right now.

Declared major does not affect admission unless it is for a specific college within a university or it is a very unique major for which you have shown a lot of passion/interest through ECs. Admissions officers know that most students will change their major at least once or several times.

That is true
