I have a BA in linguistics from OSU, and speak many languages fluently, one of which is Spanish. I am currently at a community college completing a few requirements to sit through the CPA exam. My GPA was in undergrad school, but it’s around 3.0 at the small college.
Will I have trouble finding a job since my GPA was bad at OSU and my degree was in a non-related major? Assuming I have a CPA certificate.
Do accountants generally have trouble finding work? is the competition bigger than the demand? (I am not sure if I should trust official sources (bureau of labor) for this)
Networked as in build connections with people etc etc. competitive? Depends on who you want to work for, for top firms yes definitely but aside f om that not really
My $.02 (after 25 years as a CPA), you can do just fine, but you need to go out and make it happen.
You can’t just send out resumes and hope for the best. Get some tax return skills and work as a temp during busy season. Volunteer in a CPA office if need be. Go where CPAs are and network with them.
The more work experience you have, the less and less your college GPA will matter. Plus passing the CPA should also erase any concerns about your non-accounting degree.
You can also state your “accounting GPA” on your resume, which I assume will be much higher. Lastly, you may want to consider a masters program (tax or accounting) to help the cause as well.
