Since the adcoms read so many essays, will the fresh feel of a humorous essay make the applicant stand out? I was thinking about trying a comedic take on an essay topic and was wondering if trying to be funny can sometimes make the writer seem immature... Would i be better off with my essay trying to be deep or lighthearted and funny?

They do like funny essays, but if you try to be funny and fail, it’ll really hurt you.

Yes they do.

But I cannot emphasize enough how you need to be REALLY, REALLY careful…the person reviewing you essay is not someone you know very well, so there’s no way you can effectively judge their sensativities.

If you think you can pull it off, then by all means make it funny, but don’t shoot yourself in the foot.

Humor writing is difficult to pull off. Do it and you’ll be noticed. Fail and you’ll definitely be noticed – for the wrong reason!

Good luck to you

i dont know if i want to risk it. Is there a way if i know if my essay would be appropriate?

Well, if you’re applying to some extreme reaches, then you SHOULD write an unconventional essay to one of them…it will help a lot if you make a good impression, but it won’t hurt if you screw up.

are you saying it wont hurt because if you screw up it doesnt matter because you probably would not have gotten in anyway? I will go with my safe well written essay for my safeties/matches but what if i have a low reach that i really want to get in to?

well if its Chris Rock kind of funny, its okay. But if it is like Bruno kind of stupidity, then it is bad.

lol no it’s not, have you ever seen chris rock’s stand-up

for a school like UT where much of the class is filled by top ten percenters and i am not in the top 10%, would a quirky, humorous essay be recommended?

yes i have seem chris rock stand-up, just tone down the black language a little bit and it would be a killer essay.

"well if its Chris Rock kind of funny, its okay. "

I can’t stand his humor. An essay with his kind of humor would turn me off completely.

That is what I’m afraid of^^.

Well, one guy, who got into NU, wrote about how he didn’t want to make the same mistake as his brother by applying to/attending Yale because his brother complains about the “ugly” girls at Yale. Haha. Does anyone remember this person?

are you serious!!?^ wow i guess you never know in the admission game lol

If you write a farcical or over-the-top funny/satirical essay, you are really gambling it. Look for humor everyone can appreciate.

And PLEASE do not risk your low reaches through an essay…

okay i won’t siglio

hahaha tone down the black language.

best quote of the day.
