Do adcoms search the internet for each applicants name?

"^^Stanford: don't listen to him, he's jetlagged and crazy after flying halfway across the world for close to 15 hours. He also thinks people are following him all the time."

oi! I've been sleeping 12 hours a day. the admissions officers have their own little patriot act, they're still wondering whether stanford was my first choice. :p

to the OP: don't worry.

btw, on a semi-related note, I also had the opportunity to chat with an cu admissions officer during the 2013 admitted students chat. on the topic of collegeconfidential, he advised us that there was a lot of misinformation on here and not to depend on it as a resource. also, he said that admissions officers know about it but won't try and track down a username to an applicant, and that even if they did somehow, nothing posted here would count towards their chances.

I have to agree theBeef. I heard so many scary stories that I start to believe that they are not true. Many people were telling me that even when people post those annoying "Chance Me" threads on here, they could be tracked down by an ad.officer (who would somehow happen to be here) and closely scrutinized based on SAT scores, grades, Extra Curriculars or whatever they have posted on collegeconfidential.

Please contact the newspaper and ask them to remove the article! Explain carefully why!

I'm going to hear the laughter over here thousands of miles away.

can they even see private facebook profiles? i dont think they would have the power to do that.... but i remember last year my friend asked me to put down pictures of her at parties cuz she was scared that adcomms would look her up. now that i think about it, i think its silly... as sad as it sounds i dont think they would care that much about you to google/facebook/myspace you

In response to the original question: How many applicants do you think Columbia sees during the RD cycle who were deferred or rejected during the early cycle at Stanford (or MIT, Penn, Yale, etc.)? Many. Do they know this? Yes. Are they offended that they are second (or third) choice? No. Don't worry about it.

Moreover, how many RD candidates at Columbia are also applying to Harvard or Princeton? Many. Do they know this? Yes. Are they offended that they might be second (or third) choice? No. Don't worry about it.

lol hilarious thread

Honestly, they couldn't really do this...
I just tried my name and came up with at least 8 different people, one of which is me. I don't really have a common name, either.

I wouldn't worry about it. It would be rediculous for them to hold something like that against you if they saw it, but it seems unlikely for them to even end up seeing it. If for some reason they did go as far as searching for you on google, they would probably be impressed to see you see there was an article by you, but who knows if they'd even spend time reading it. At least something shows up when your name is googled...if you seach for me, everything is about Julius Caesar! It takes pages to finally find anything about the actual me.
