I'm wondering... has an officer ever looked up an applicant on Facebook?

& is it possible that it could be used as a slight/deciding factor?

I heard that they sometimes google names. It’s a good idea to privatize everything, set a good profile pic, and un-friend all the druggies on your friends list.

Does a ten pound bag of flour make a really big biscuit?

if it’s a big school I don’t see how they’d have the time. unless you sounded suggestive in your application or something.

On one tour I went on they said they WOULD check facebook/ the internet for applicants, but usually only if they had a reason to suspect they might find something incriminating.

Um, yes. Yes they do. I’d agree with post #2. Just make anything you don’t want them to be able to see private [photo albums, wall, whatever].

if you have a common name it might be hard for them to check, and they might not think it’s worth hunting a profile down

^^ Or just make sure you don’t have photos of you drunk and/or grinding your friend ;)

I don’t think they expect your FB to be like… having statuses such as “Helping a 7th grader with math is so rewarding” and “AP Bio is fun!”
.

Don’t have anything on your account you wounldn’t want admissions officers seeing

Is Ed “Too Tall” Jones really too tall?

Great username and location, by the way.

Using common sense, I would say no, they do not. Unless it’s for some highly prestigious program, they’re not going to take the time to hunt you down.

Now employers do look at your facebook. However, they would still have to hunt you down.

It’s called privacy settings. Use them.

But no, they don’t. Its too much work to look up someone and not everyone is searchable.

May I ask what college this was? Also, maybe they just tell people this to spook them about their online information.

Anyway, googling my name just yields a historical figure. He even had the same nickname as me! Also, I don’t have a facebook, and “BillyMc” is the closest I’ve come to showing my name online. I’m not concerned, but I do not suspect that many (if any) colleges seriously look up their applicants. Employers, however, do (well, at least some). Several people my parents know have run into problems with the facebook/myspace information out there. If you can make it private, go for that.

here’s my problem with this. My profile is set to completely private, so alot of people cant find anything if they search for me.
However, someone else has the same name as me, without the best profile picture. It doesn’t say any info about where she’s from etc., so I’m hoping they don’t mistake her for me…
