I read on a few threads about schools sending ou “likely letters.” I had never heard about this practice before. I applied ED2 to University of Richmond, but haven’t heard anything. Which schools send out these letter?

dunno about Richmond, but the quick answer to your question is no, particularly public schools.

A kind of related question:

If you get a letter from a specific department, does that indicate likelihood to get in, or just that they've read your application and noted your interests?

I got a letter from the chair of the music department at one of the schools I'm applying to, telling me about the music program. I don't really have any outstanding awards or anything in music, other than being in band all 4 years and playing guitar/bass in my spare time...

No, all schools do not send out likely letters.

And the ones that do, only send them out to the top applicants they get, to try and get your interest set on them instead of on another school. Not getting a likely letter by a school that does send them in no way means that you don't have a good chance to get in either. I don't recall my friend at U of R this year getting a likely letter during senior year, and he's on full academic scholarship.

As for which schools send them... the only one I know of personally is Virginia Tech, because they sent me one (I was surprised, from a large public school).

Juba... not sure about that one, email the department?
