So I hate coding and I was wondering if coding is involved with other types of engineering branches such as electronic or aerospace? I know software engineering requires it. Thank You for the feedback and help
Engineering curricula commonly include a computing for engineers course, commonly using MATLAB (GNU Octave is similar, if you want to preview). Writing computer programs will be much more of a focus in computer science and engineering and software engineering than in other kinds of engineering. But a basic understanding of computing is relevant to all engineering, since many things that engineers design include computers now.
Not to mention that most design work is done on a computer. At the very least you ought to be able to do some basic levels of data analysis on a computer, which often involves at least some coding.
A computer is a tool that almost every engineer I know uses. Some use it more than others. You don’t have to know how to code specifically but you do need a basic understanding of how computers work to be an effective engineer. So, most engineering programs will involve at least one programming class. The grade in that class was one that I would specifically look at to be sure the person I was looking to hire had “some” computer skills.
At the school I go to (Cornell), all engineers are required to take a coding class just because computers are an indispensable tool for any engineer. You must atleast be familiar with the concept of programming and the algorithmic thinking skills computer scientists possess; it’s a necessity in this field of study. That being said, there are college coding classes that assume no prior knowledge of coding and work with you to develop your skills.
Electrical and aerospace engineering majors almost definitely will pursue higher computer science classes. At the very least, you’ll probably need to have familiarity with a few programming languages (Java and C++ probably) to graduate.
Coding today is like typing was for an earlier generation. Not strictly necessary, but well, yeah it kind of is.
+I hate coding" - Explain what kind of coding you’ve done and why you didn’t like it. That will help us advise you better.
I have done PHP and Java and I didn’t like the fact of how long it takes and I was bored with it
I took one Fortran class in 1983 as a general requirement for my engineering degree, and I haven’t done any coding since. Used plenty of programs, but haven’t written any. It is just one class. No different from your history requirement.
Programming is a pretty “toy” that I once hated and was the one thing I was scared of even touching going into electrical engineering. LOL the first real programming I worked with was assembly with friends after church. And random AP Computer Science book from the library to self-study the concept in HS didn’t do programming any justice. It wasn’t until I started C++ self-study w/ exercises in college to prerequisite bypass a course that I enjoyed it… Working with microcontrollers, programming simulations… Solving problems… Heck, now I wish I studied CS because it’s more fun and algorithms than I knew before. --I’m a strategy gamer personality type…
