do any of you guys know Webb school of Cali?

One of my friend goes here and wants to know the how famous his school is in the nation(lyke ranking wise) and wondering just the fact that he attend there for 4 years will help alot to get admitted to top choices…

bumpibumpi!!

I have never heard of this school until you mentioned it.

Webb is a better than average boarding school(s), but not in the league with the top NE (Andover, Sr. Paul's, Exeter, Deerfield) or even the top in Cali (Thatcher, Cate). It's as good a place as most to apply to college from but no special advantage.

oh really? my friend said Webb grew up so much recent years. he told me, last year they sent 5 stanford 3 harvard 2 yale 1 princeton 2-3 penn, few more ivz 1 chicago 2 rice 5 northwestern(some of them 7 year medical pro), 10 USC, some UCB,LA,SD. pomona. average SAT of 1350.
I think that is definitely better than Thacheer and cate. what do you think? their each class is under 90.

Not even close to Thatcher and Cates numbers sent to top colleges, and there are 15 or so E Coast schools that do better. Take a look at their web sites. Inm addition to the ones above there is Choate, Hotchkiss, Groton, Taft, Milton, Lawrenceville.....The best preps have an acceptance rate under 25%. Webbs is over 60%. No offense meant, but these things are pure stats.

Webb is a strong prep school but not as well-known as the NE schools. Educational consultants are very high on it. It is a fairly small school and has a good community. It is highly regarded and will be viewed favorably by an admissions committee.

One has to be careful comparing Calif. prep school college matriculation figures to NE prep school matriculation figures. In California, many "top" students don't want to go to the east coast - they want to go to UCB, UCLA or UCSD or Stanford. Comparing matriculation numbers, therefore, is not a measure of the quality of a school or its ability to get students accepted at Ivy's or other east coast schools. You'd really need to drill down and compare where students applied and where they were accepted - not just matriculation figures. And, by the same token, boarding schools on the west coast are just not as popular as they are on the east coast - they attract less applicants. Therefore, comparing admissions numbers alone is probably not a real measure of academic quality either, any more than it is a measure of a college or university's quality.

Actually, Thantcher, where my ex husband is very involved as an alum, is every bit as hard to get into as the top E. Coast schools. Youngest son is looking now. They take about 24% of applicants and require about a 90 SSAT score. These are almost identical numbers as the top E. Coast schools. And few from Thatcher choose UC schools as top choices. Stanford most popular, followed by ivys and top LACs. You would be surprised at how popular Thatcher and Cate now are, we were. We also looked at Webb and considered it as a back up. But it is much less competitive and sends many fewer kids to top colleges.

Carolyn, I must give you credit for consistently showing wisdom and intelligence.

one more question my friend is below averge student in webb. decent SAT(1300) with great chance of gettin recurited. does he fit to Emory? or better than that?

Depends on his curriculum, GPA, class rank, rec's, ec's, etc. His SATs are on the low side for Emory but all of the above MAY balance things out. It's hard to tell without knowing more about him.

well i posted this in another forum as me...but actually it is my friend..so here we go..

He is an international student from korea
he came to America 4.5 years ago.
GPA is 2.84 weighted(I kno itz low).
AP Chem, 1 honor.
SAT I is 710 math 600 verbal
SAT II is 680 math iic(looking at 750) 480 writing (looking at 600) 750 spanish 800 Korean
Varsity track & soccer
varsity track captain
30 days work experience (internship)
3 years orchestra (first-flute)
1 senior year chamber (advanced singing)
and some clubs and stuffz
wanna major in business mostly

Emory track coach seems interested...(Babson really wants him for sure)
he will place at least top 3 in his two events when he get there..(top 2 are seniors too)
where will he end up going to?

A low GPA and 1 AP at Webb is not exactly a strong performance. I have way higher grades and can't transfer to Thatcher. I'm a trying.

All Webb kids log onto ratemyteachers.com and weigh in.

I just read through this whole discussion. Carolyn, I don't know anyone at Webb who WANTS to go to a UC. Heck, our parents are paying $35,000 for this, isn't college worth $40,000? Lots end up at a UC because they can easily get in compared to the good private colleges. My worst fear is a UC.

brady, do you honestly think that UCLA and Berkeley are easy to get into? Maybe they are not your cup of tea, and thats fine, but they are in no way "easy" to get into. You personally may not want to go to a UC but they are but a dream for thousands of people.

i heard of it. i was gonna apply but decided not to. looks nice though.

Brady - Aren't you Lisa Fillmore's son? At least that's what she said on the parent's board today. Guess her opinion of the Webb School makes sense now - you're trying to transfer out and haven't been able to get into Thatcher? I'm surprised she didn't just say that in her first post about Webb, especially because above she says that your parents looked at Webb but considered a backup, implying that they didn't end up sending you there. ANd it's interesting that you go to a prep school in CALIFORNIA when your mother says she lives in NY. Hmmm...

Carolyn, Brady wishes to be anymous here. As I use a former last name, I suppose he still is, but why would you ask? It's it already clear there are other Webb kids here? And yes Carolyn, in this day and age all kids do not live with their mother, though Brady is with me this week and often and lived with me before he began high school. Why would you want to ruffle feathers with a 16 year old?
