Do any parents think I can get into Michigan State University?

I have always wanted to go to Michigan State University, but I am worried I might not get in. Here are my credentials:

I have a 3.22 GPA, and a 23 ACT (retake score pending). I have recommendations from teachers, a University of Michigan-Dearborn professor, and a few people in the Michigan House of Representatives. I have 100 volunteer hours. I am Captain of the Varsity Wrestling Team and on the JV Cross Country Team. I had an internship in the House of Representatives and an internship with the University of Michigan professor. I was on Student Council and received a Leadership Award, a Science Fair Honorable Mention, a Varsity Letter Award, and I am on the Honor Roll. I also have taken several honors courses and a very challenging college prep curriculm. I am also a michigan resident.

I don't see any reason you WOULDN'T get in. I know students with lesser credentials who did not get in. If you want a scholarship, that will be tough --- and it might be tough if you want to get into an honors program. But you should certainly get into MSU. Just make sure you apply early. The kids I know who didn't get in applied in November/December or later.

Apply early, try to get your ACT to 25 (which I think is mid-point this year) and don't let that 3.2 go any lower. Friends of my son with similar stats from a very good, known competitive Michigan public school eventually got in 2 years ago with stats similar to yours, but MSU asked for their first semester grades before they were accepted. MSU is definitely more competitive than several years ago as far as I can tell.

my gpa should actually come up a little

The Common Data Set for Michigan State University, which can be found at

Common Data Set - September 2007

provides information on the qualifications of the students admitted to the freshman class to begin in Fall 2007. In this group, the middle 50% had ACT composite scores ranging from 23 to 27 (25%ile to 75%ile). Specifically, the ACT composite score was 30-36 for 10.5% of admitted students, 24-29 for 55.1%, 18-23 for 31.4% and 12-17 for 3.0%. Your current score is below average, but within the admitted range.

In cases where the students' high schools provided class rank, 28.9% of the admitted students ranked in the top 10% of their class, 69.2% ranked in the top quarter of the class, and 96.2% ranked in the top half of the class.

The average GPA of admitted students was 3.59. 34.3% had GPA's of 3.75 and up, 31.2% had GPA's of 3.50-3.74, 21.4% had GPA's of 3.25-3.49, 7.7% had GPA's of 3.00-3.24, and 5.1% had GPA's of 2.50-2.99.

This lets you see where your qualifications fall statistically. The overall admissions rate among applicants was high, 7737 or 11041 male applicants were admitted and 10303 of 13395 female applicants.

Your extra-curricular record looks quite strong to me. It seems as though it might be an advantage if you could pull your GPA just above 3.25. You might want to visit Michigan State and talk to an admissions counselor.

Sorry, that one line should have read "7737 out of 11041 male applicants were admitted."
