Do average students get into top schools?

Well. By top schools, I don't mean the elite ivy league or top ten schools (ie MIT, Stanford, etc...), lol.

Any of the schools in the "CC Top Universities" and "CC Top Liberal Art Colleges"... is it possible?

For someone with like a GPA in the 3.5~3.8 WEIGHTED range (not in the top 10%tile... but with the most rigorous courseload) and good SATs (2100+) and a few extracurriculars, but not really standing out in any way...

Is it possible? sighs

Mnn, there are about 3500 schools out there happy to have your application, including many in the top 350. Go for it!

I know a kid who got into the university of michigan with a sub-3.0 gpa, and like a 21 on the act.

The OP's stats sound like they are above average

Those stats are way above average, the average student has like a 2.5 with a 1500 sat.

No, average SAT is about 1000.

I think Drew must be referring to the new SAT, but there aren't really stats on that yet.

Your SAT score is well above average. However, what's your unweighted GPA? That's a large determinant as well.

yeah, those stats are definitely above average. "average" is not near top 10%/most rigorous courseload. "average" is far below 2100 SAT.

unweighted GPA is like 3.2-3.3ish. groan

Personally I had only a 2000, yet managed some pretty awesome, spectacular colleges, so I can't be much upset about that :)

Average students do not get into top colleges. Students with 2100 SAT's do get into top colleges on a rather regular basis.

i got into top colleges (cornell, etc) with a 1940, and 3.7 gpa

^ i thought you only got guarenteed transfer to cornell... so where are going until 2008?

well now its between nyu, carnegie mellon (got into 1, waitlist at another), and chicago if I can get off the waitlist. And guarantee transfer basically means that you are in at cornell with minimum requirements so I can safely say Cornell 2010 :).

Average students can get into top colleges. Admission into a college is not only based on your stats. If someone had stats that were not as high as another applicant, but his/her essays were awesome, then i would think that he would be admitted. From what you have said about yourself, it seems though that your stats are not just average, they are pretty good. Don't stress yourself out too much about this! :)

Um, YEAH. I know this one girl...
