Do awards matter?

Just curious...there's a place on all the apps for them, and when people do "chances" threads (yawn...haha), they always include awards.

Honestly I haven't got any.

So what's the deal?

well awards are a means for a person to distinguish themselves from the pack, a way for some to show excellence in a certain subject or with a certain talent. yeah, they matter. however, some schools dont really give awards out so its tough for there to be a standard amount of awards to get into X College, so if you have strong scores, gpa, EC's, essays, youll be fine

Yeah, my school doesn't give out any awards except for student of the month (total BS) and honor roll (which is just a trophy for kids with a good GPA).

I see lots of people who place in debate, or at math and science competitions, but all of my ECs are non-academic. So shrug. Hopefully this won't hurt me too much in the admissions game.

I'm in the same situation.

I'm just going to do my best with what I've got.

nah it probably wont, especially if like you say your EC's dont involve tournaments or anything. an idea though, if you could get a letter of rec from someone related to your EC's instead of an award, it might have the same effect, just a thought. i wouldnt think you are really at a disadvantage though, dont worry about it.

Most awards mean nothing, so don't worry.
