Do campus visits play any roll at all in the admissions process?

Not the interview, just a regular campus visit. I know schools like students that show interest in their school, so is it even a possible factor?

Yes, they record that you've visited and they see it with your application. It helps, especially at smaller schools.

Er, from what I've found, most universities don't keep track of who visits and who doesn't. Stanford, for example, doesn't care.

Well ferrisbueller said that it helps especially at smaller schools, and Stanford is not really a small school..

this varies a lot by school-
you can always ask them if they track that sort of thing or not

The Common Data Sets (Section C7) tell you whether each school tracks interest or not.

Visits are a good idea whether the college tracks interest or not. An overnight visit at your top choice(s) is also a good idea.

a few highly selective schools, such as emory, yes. HYPSM et al, no.

I work in the field. The best schools log student contacts ... campus tours, open houses, high school visits, alum interviews. They want to accept students who plan to attend because (1) they report the percent of accepts who enroll and they want that figure to be high, because it indicates the desirability of the school, and (2) they want their students to be excited about attending, engaged community participants, and positive student representatives. A lack of contact could mean that a borderline applicant does not gain admission, since it indicates a lack of interest in the school.

admisscouns:

several Ivies categorically state on their cds that "interest" and visits are NOT an admissions criteria, primarily bcos visits discriminate economically and geographically. Are you stating that the Ivies do in fact care about visits?

Yes in some cases. Many colleges want to improve their yield. They believe if you visit the campus you are more interested in coming.

admisscouns writes: "I work in the field. The best schools log student contacts"

Well, I guess Stanford must not be on your list of best schools ;)

Does Stanford show preference in the admission process for students who have demonstrated their interest by visiting, calling and emailing?

Not at all. Contacting the Admission Office is neither a requirement nor an advantage in our admission process. We offer campus tours and information sessions to provide you with the information you need to make an informed college choice, not to evaluate you. And we welcome calls and emails for the same reason. Please do not feel compelled to contact us to demonstrate your interest in Stanford; we know by the very fact of your applying that you are seriously interested in Stanford. We don’t keep records of prospective student contacts with our office.
