Do Coaches have a part to play in admission?

I was wondering if the athletics coaches, for instance the head coach of the college soccer team or of the basketball team could influence admission decisions, if yes to what extent? How beneficial is it to have a preadmission linkup with the coach?? By influence, I don't mean for any athletic scholarships as such.....I mean to say if by somehow the coach happens to contact us, does that mean more admission chances?

I don't think so really, since it's not the coaches but the admission officers who determine your admission; so it's not a factor unless the coach is so impressed with you that he goes out of his way to recommend you to the admission officers.

But having contacts within the college is always a useful idea if you are planning to enroll there, even if it doesn't necessarily improve your chances.

If the coach wants you for a team (say you send him a video and get in touch with him, etc), you are almost definitely in. The admissions office lets the coaches choose who they want for the varsity teams, and doesn't interfere with the decision. You have to be really good to be on a varsity team though.

I've tried contacting professors instead... as I'm not that much into sports..

what do u actually say to the professors???

Ask them questions. Be curious. Show interest. Establish connections with the professors of majors you want to take, if at all possible, before you even apply. Small schools and liberal arts colleges typically will respond much quicker than big ones...I myself have emailed 8-10 colleges and am corresponding their admissions office and some select professors on a 2-3 day basis...not only does it help them get an idea of who you are, even before application review, but it helps you get an idea of what kind of school you're getting into. Because, believe it or not, college websites only provide about 0.00001% of the picture.

thanks haru07...i had contacted the coach but not the professors....i think i will do so now....

Actually, a good idea is, to ask a specific question about some program to the admissions office not the professor, as professors will sometimes get irritated if some no-namer (= people before applying, or during application) suddenly e-mails him or her with a barrage of questions he doesn't have the time to answer.

Once you ask the admission office some specific question, they may not be able to reply, and will *refer[/] you to a professor who will in turn e-mail you. Now they have taken the initiative to contact you, which is good. Of course, if the college's website says feel free to contact, feel free to contact them = P

the worst case is when they refer us to the websites which we have visited literally 1000 times....

A coach of a college contacted me asking me to send my athletic schedule transcripts & a video to him. I'm an International student and I don't know what he probably means by an ''athletic schedule''. I also don't know what should be the content of the video, I just don't want to goof up and create a bad impression on these college officials. You all must be well versed with these pre application thingies ...so what should should I do? Its been months since that coach contacted me. Kindly advice

If its been months its been way too long.. Send it as fast as you can and apologise for sending it so late..

About the video, he's probably contacted you for a particular sport.. Do you play any sport at a national or international level? Which sport are you best in? Send him a video of that..

No,I'm not a national level player(for that matter not even a state player), I'm just confused about the content of the video. I mean should it be kind of an intro or something(of about 2-3 min.).For the record I'm planning a 3-4 min. video where I'll explain my athletic pasts and achievements, will that do ?
or videos are made differently than that ?
Watercannon thanks for that quick response.

I'm pretty sure the video is supposed to be of you playing the sport eg soccer.

There are many videos like that on youtube (uploaded by the player's parents or something), so coaches can look at them and contact them. (usually soccer).

Whats an 'Athletic Schedule'?????????
