Do college appeals usually work?

I got denied from a college that I really want to go to. I am going to appeal in hopes that they change their mind. My grades overall are not good enough to get me into the school but I have good SAT scores and I have shown great improvement.

I’m sorry to say, they usually do not work.

When appeals are successful, it’s almost always because the original decision was made with incomplete or incorrect information–e.g., the college mis-filed the recommendation from your Honors Chemistry teacher, or it never received your most recent SAT scores, which were 200 points higher than the ones they did have. I have never heard of a college or university that reversed its original decision because an applicant really wanted to go there.

I wish I had better news for you.

As the poster above said, they rarely work.

Usually? No.

How do private universities make their decisions? Is it based on application only or mid-term grades are taken into account?

My son has shining record until Junior yr, but one bad grade in fall semester of senior year is what we think was the reason why USC rejected him. We can’t make up our mind whether to appeal or not. Anyone with such experience here ? Would you take a look at my son’s appeal ?

What would be the substance of your appeal? What information would your appeal present that USC didn’t already have when they made their decision?

explanation of his one bad grade & appeal to overlook this one bad grade in context of his over all high performance in his high school.

Does USC even consider appeals? Most private schools do not. It’s also unlikely one bad grade caused him to be rejected.

USC does consider appeals. I don’t know for sure what the reason could be. I only know that some students with similar GPA/SAT etc. got in.
Would it hurt to appeal anyway?

Colleges look at much more than just the stats. They want a well rounded class. I think appealing at a private college is a waste of time.

Also, based on your thread on the FA board, wouldn’t USC be unaffordable for you? If they accepted your DS on appeal, it would not be with merit aid, so you’d have to pay your full EFC, which is probably higher there than at a UC.

Thanks Waverly…that definitely makes sense. Acceptance by appeal is not going to be good deal with USC.
