Do college erase applications once answered?

Once you get an answer from a college about your application, does the college keep all the information from your application such as essays, scores, transcripts and what not? Or do they delete it all?

This is an interesting question.

Not that I would do this, but somebody could lie about their ethnicity. Once they got away with it, they would be home free. The college would never be able to see what ethnicity they marked down and thus they would never get into trouble for it…

That is SO wrong, but… Someone could do it.

No idea, but they should keep it for future reference.

But you really think they have room?

Actually, I’m pretty sure they do keep it. That’s why they have “have you applied here before” questions. I’ve read that they ask that because they think it’s interesting to see what’s changed since the last time you applied–for MIT, at least. I assume it’s the same at other schools.

Colleges do keep application files for quite a while after each admission season. Every once in a while, a student who has already enrolled has his or her admission rescinded if a lie is discovered in the application file. In extraordinary cases, a student who has already graduated could have his or her degree revoked by a college for fraud in the application process, although examples of this are rare.
