Do college GPA's typically increase or decrease from freshman year?

Does it usually go up because the student has more experience in college, or down because the classes get harder because they're taking higher level classes? I have a 3.85 for both semesters of my freshman year, which I just finished. Should I expect it to go up, down, or stay the same? I once heard that college students usually can expect lower gpa's in college than in high school because the work is harder. It really was harder, but my high school gpa was 3.6.

Congratulations, you’re really doing well! What is your major? Mine was engineering, and the weedout classes came early. Physics was a killer! I had a 4.0 GPA in high school, but I made a C in my first semester of physics. Freaked me out. I ended up making a couple of more Cs during college, but my final GPA was 3.82. So it really depends on your major. I would suggest asking a senior in your major and see what he or she says. The important thing is to keep studying hard and don’t let your guard down. Some variables you just can’t control, such as how tough the profs in each class grade you.

Thank you! My major is international studies, and I’m going to start a TESOL certificate next semester. The classes I took were: Composition 1, Intermediate Japanese 1, World/Cultural Geography, History: World From 1500, Asian Civilizations, Japanese Literature, Intermediate Japanese 2, and Documentaries and writing. Next semester, I’m going to take Jazz History, TESOL 1, Advanced Japanese Composition, and Introduction to Sociology. All of the classes I took in the first semester were general education, and all of them except for two double counted as required and elective classes for my major.
