When reviewing a prospective student's application...do they actually look into your ECs? Is it possible to lie (just hypothetical...I don't plan on lying)

if you lie and they find out, then you'll be banned from all the colleges (like for UC schools, you'll be prohibited from entering any of the UC schools) and so forth

I don't think most actually check every applicants EC's...that would take way too long. But, if someone puts down an EC that is somehow inconsistent or looks suspicious, then the college might check up on it. I know the UCs will audit random admitted applicants info to make sure everything is true, and, if it isn't, then...

then you're OUT buddy, strke 3

i would assume not, because i know a really smart guy from a very good prep school who had basically no ECs but lied about a bunch of them on his application to princeton, and got in. i was a bit surprised that the guidance counselor from his HS didnt notice because it's a pretty small school

seriously, how could he live with himself? that's gotta be haunting him now. sigh...

More risk than reward if you lie.
Plus, how would it feel for 4 years knowing you don't really deserve to be where you are?

I agree. So Im going to write a really good essay instead to balance out my lack of ECs.

not really. some people dont have a sense of guilt. Instead, that guy in Princeton may think himself as brilliant and clever.

Plus, it's not like you're in the safe if you get in... If you get caught 3 years into college or something, you get kicked out and you lose the tuition you paid. Or even if you've graduated and they find out later, you could get your diploma revoked... Not a good deal.

agreed. :-o

better off not making up stuff out of the blue. but small exaggerations , what can ya do? what if you were in a club and can't remmeber exactly HOW MANY HORUS A WEEK YOU PUT IN, you just have to estimate

What you can do is be a bit vague about something so it sounds a bit better than it really is...But don't lie...If, by chance, they do check, you're virtually screwed...

Frankly, I do not think they do.
Say you said that you were in some bike club and rode 3 hours every weekend? But what if you skipped every other weekend? How would they know?
But then again, why would anybody lie anyways? I bet everybody has some kind of EC and if not, a very good reason that they could write about in their application...
