Do colleges already know that you're a finalist?

Title seems self-explanatory. I just don't know if I need to tell the college that I applied to that I'm a finalist or if they already know.

I was told by the recruiter at OU that they are not notified of finalist standing.

No, they definitely don’t as we are still receiving NM info in the mail and S is not a finalist.

No, they don’t know. My D sent a brief email to admissions at each college where she has applied and also those where she is accepted to add this information to her application. It doesn’t require a lot of explanation, just let them know that you have been notified that you have been named a National Merit Finalist. It could help in your admissions or in their merit aid decisions.

Usually, students who are finalists who want a NMF scholarship from a college must send the school a copy of their finalist papers.

I don’t know if the final “naming” of a #1 choice authorizes NMCorp to notify that college in May or not.

This is from the NMSC info sheet for semifinalists, and starts on 1 Mar for this year’s finalists. Since they refer to “first group”, my guess would be that NMSC will periodically send updates to sponsor universities with the names of additional finalists who may have recently named them as their #1 choice.

Alabama is the only school that asked that the letter/certificate be provided. Other schools my D is still considering indicated thanks for advising them, but they take notification when a students name turns up on the first choice list noted above which is sent periodically between March 1 and the final list after April 30.
