do colleges care about AP scores?

well do they?

state universities and small colleges use them only for placement
but, ivies and other competitive colleges also use that for admissions

Of course they care. Doing well on AP exams as well as in classes gives an indication of how well you might perform in a rigorous college classroom.

Of course they don't. They want you to score bad so you don't get credit so the colleges can make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Regardless of what ulterior motives colleges might have, you should try to do well on your AP exams.
