For a particular course I struggled in, I got a B first semester and family stuff happened, and I then I got a C second semester. To raise my GPA, I took an AP class over the summer, (AP Psych), although it was one semester. Should I input the grade into my freshman year GPA, or save it for my first semester sophomore year GPA? What will look better for colleges?
Don’t do anything based upon “what will look better for colleges.”
That said, colleges look at cumulative GPA; they are not going to analyze it semester by semester. In terms of where your summer classes “go,” follow the lead of where your HS places it for GPA calculation purposes.
Some colleges discount freshman grades; most do not. However, they will be looking for an upward trend in grades. Don’t get stressed over past grades since there is absolutely nothing you can do about them now.
Actually for most colleges your freshman gpa does not factor into your Cummalative GPA, yes colleges do look at frehsman year to see a progression in difficulty in courses as well as in grades, but they don’t honestly care about it.
@hailey5799 Please. The most notable ones that ditch freshman year grades are the UCs, Princeton, and Stanford. Ivies and Psuedo-ivies (MIT, Caltech, etc.) want to see students who are successful from the start.
freshman year is just to see increase in course rigor and see that you are doing well and able to handle high school. Even though at most schools they include, as @basedchem stated you can attend those ones if you do well the rest of the years.
@basedchem Is it true! Stanford and UCB ditch freshmen GPA? I’m an international student. My freshmen GPA was very low. 3.2, because my English was bad that time. But on sophomore and junior, I improved significantly. 3.9 and 4.25. Will Stanford, UCB and MIT take account into the fact that I’m not fluent with English in my freshment year? A little fact: all my high school education years are in legit American schools, so no chance of faking GOA like some local Chinese students do. (No offense, but that’s what I saw)
Plus. Where can I find official information about schools ditching freshment GPA?
