exactly what the title says

They take you at your word. They don’t do criminal background checks, if that’s what you mean. However, they ask for you to attest to anything in your background, and if you lie, they will rescind any and everything, including diplomas later in life. Colleges may sue for scholarship money granted. If you take federal grants, you may get prosecuted too.

UVA President John Casteen is now looking into ways to access criminal reports on students due to the the murder of Yeardley Love (allegedly) by another student who had several arrests for alcohol induced violence.

Meaning, could you make up activities and awards on your application and not get caught?

^ I think that the things that can be made up and gotten away with are the things that aren’t going to be impressing anyone anyway.

you could make up an activity like “Soccer Team Captain 4 years” and they might not look into it, especially a big state school that has like 10,00 apps a year. its unethical, but that just goes to show the standards of public higher education in this country

No I’m not going to make up anything.

I was asking because I wondered whether colleges can obtain sealed records.

E.g., (not saying that any of these pertain to me) medical, adoption, family court, etc.

But since most public colleges don’t give a flip about applicants’ ECs, how is this an indictment of them?

I’ve never heard of colleges routinely running background checks on all applicants.
