I know that colleges give credit for AP Classes but does that mean they make them count towards your college GPA?

For example, a college may give you 4 credits for getting a 3 on the AP Calculus Exam. Although you may be exempt from Calculus, does that 3 also translate to a "C" on your overall College GPA? Similiarly, would getting a 5 on the AP exam add an extra "A" to your GPA? Or do colleges simply exempt you from Calculus and not count your AP Score towards college GPA?
