do colleges favor SAT more than the ACT?

They usually favor both tests about the same. Hence many colleges require either SAT or ACT.

Colleges today readily accept either and do not state a preference for either. The exception is the Cal Polys which about 4 years ago began stating a preference for the ACT.

This is a popular misconception. To the best of my knowledge all colleges weight each test equally, especially if they explicitly state they will accept either the SAT or the ACT.

Keep in mind that if you do opt for the ACT, be sure to take it with the “optional” writing section.

My son has a 34 composite and 35 superscore on the ACT but a 2230 on the SAT. I believe that the ACT is comparably a bit higher. Should he send the colleges only his ACT or send both the ACT and SAT?

Send both. Scores are close enough to each other that you cannot definitely say which the college will consider is better – colleges do not necessarily follow conversion tables you find on-line. If you send both college will choose which it considers better for purpose of determining admission. Also be aware that majority of colleges do not superstore ACTs.

jemmieling - he should definitely send both.

as for the OPs question - most schools dont have a strong preference and the situations in which a mild preference ends up mattering are quite rare. take whichever one you feel you will do better at (or both just to see)

SAT 2400 has more psychological impact on admission officers than ACT 36.

@cocksure: and why do you say that? What basis do you have to say that since you’re only a HS student?

Thanks a lot for your answers, Batgirl and Drusba. I showed them to my son, and he will send both scores. He plans to retake the SAT next fall also. Interestingly, more and more schools are starting to superscore the ACT now (eg Washington University in St. Louis, Brown University, Williams, and a number of others.). However, we have noticed that most of the colleges do not mention in their official website whether they superscore the SAT or the ACT; we have found out whether they do or not from other sources online (which may be incorrect??).

What is superscore? Do they somehow blend the essay scores in with the composite?

Superscore means to take the highest section scores from multiple tests as the scores used to determine admission. Example: you submit SAT score with 700M , 680CR, and 700W and a second test with 750M, 660CR, and 680W. Your superscore used to determine admission is 750M, 680CR, and 700W. Majority of colleges superscore SATs but only a minority superscore ACTs.

Anyone know about how you can convert ACT scores to SAT scores?

Q: "Do colleges favor SAT more than the ACT? "

A: No.

No. Rice admin told us that this question drives them crazy. That they thought when they said you dont need sat 2 if you do act " it would dawn on you east coasters that we really like act but it never does. Never…sigh".
