My S put his NMSF status on his college apps and I am wondering how the colleges he applied to find out if he makes it to Finalist status. Does he need to let them know or do they have access to it?

Mainly I am curious if becoming an NMF would help raise his app in the eyes of the AdComms and whether he should let them know if it actually happens.

Since ~94% of all NMSFs become NMF, I would think most colleges would assume that a Semi-finalist will become a Finalist, so that probably won’t make a difference. Likewise, if he had bad grades on his transcript, they will see that and know that he would not become a NMF.

A college will only know if you are a Finalist if you have named them as your “First Choice” with NMSC or if you tell them. It cannot hurt to inform them yourself and some may ask for a copy of your Finalist certificate. I don’t think they will just assume one way or the other, especially they do not get lists of NMSF’s either.

I should add that only colleges that participate in the “college-sponsored” scholarships will receive those lists of students who have named them as their first choice. If the school does not participate in the NMSC program, they will not get any list of Finalists.

That is exactly what I was curious about so thank you! Just wanted to know how proactive my S would have to be if he gets NMF.
