Do colleges have different methods of GPA calculation?

So as a freshman, I met with my school counselor, and she told me that my town doesn't send rank, only percentiles, because it's easier for colleges to calculate GPA in their own way. Is this true, do colleges calculate GPA with their own methods? If so, what are some of the methods used, if anyone knows?

Different colleges will look at your transcript differently. Some will look at course selection and rigor carefully and some will look at simple GPA averages.

Some colleges recalculate GPA based on their own criteria. For example: One college my D is applying to starts with the unweighted GPA and adds a point to the unweighted grade for every honors or AP course.

Many high schools have different numbers of AP courses they offer, (plus whether IB is even offered), therefore taking your un-weighted GPA, and rank or decile within your class, and then your course rigor within your graduating class for the duration of your high school years, seems like a fair way to look at it.

Some colleges don’t count fr year grades in your gpa.
