Do Colleges Look at 8th Grade Grades

Hi!
I am in 8th grade and my grades are basically average (one A, two A-'s, two B+'s). What I’m really concerned about is that I got a B- on one of my exams (this was in the class I was an A student in so it was an outlier from the rest of my grades). My teacher said most colleges look at 8th grade grades and I am wondering if he is saying that to motivate us to work harder or if it is true.

Unless you’re taking courses that will show up on your high school transcript, I’m pretty sure colleges won’t even have access to your 8th grade grades. I think your teacher is just trying to keep you from slacking off.

@sportsdude10113 Thank you so much!

Even if your 8th grade grades appear on your transcript (e.g. from taking Algebra I or Spanish I), most (all?) colleges will not consider them in the admissions decision.

You’re in 8th grade. You should be outside playing or doing goofy things. Get away from College Confidential for now.

I agree. Leave. Now. Come back junior year. You’ll thank me later.

Why is an 8th grader worrying about university??

We have seen threads from juniors and seniors who are surprised to discover that their 8th grade math or foreign language classes affect their HS GPAs or class standing. To the OP: ask your counselor how your school district handles this issue.

That is a different issue unrelated to what admissions officers view.

You’re in 8th grade run while you still can lol come back in 10th grade

On the unrelated issue of advanced 8th grade classes affecting class rank, do admissions officers adjust for any impact of those grades (I assume it would be tough)?

Doubtful. So many schools have stopped ranking anyway, for an AO, the difference between 4/400 and 20/400 is negligible.

In my high school, the parents complained so much that language counted in 8th grade and most people were in the dark about this fact that they made it pass/fail. Of course, all the parents of the smart kids were annoyed because it was an easy 4.0 added to the GPA.

You’re in 8th grade??? Get off college confidential (and start lifting weights)

Most colleges don’t look at your 8th grade grades unless you are taking some form of dual enrollment/AP classes that would count towards high school. The best way to find out is to ask your GC and see if any courses you are taking would be reported on your HS transcript.

Even if they were, the B’s won’t affect you that much anyways.

Also, your HS grades, GPA and courses will be adjusted anyways by colleges on their own scale. I don’t think 8th grade classes will be included in that adjustment.

I was pretty worried about colleges since 6th grade lol.

Anyways if you take h.s credit classes then it will affect your GPA except for UCs.

Yeah same here. But seriously, leave for now, and come back 10th or 11th grade. Enjoy life while you still can!
