Do colleges look at internships during the application process?

I'm doing an internship with the NIH this summer (SIP - summer internship program), a position that is generally reserved for college students with much more experience than I have. While I do not necessarily want to go into the field that I will be working in this summer, will colleges look highly upon this? Does this give me any leverage?

Yes! In my opinion they speak volumes more than your traditional ECs

wow dude i saw that on the NIH website…you’re pretty beast for being accepted to it. i got some questions, lets chat some time!

IME, they look at internships in combination with your other ECs. They also try to get a feel for how you got the internship- from one extreme (highly competitive and you’re hot stuff) to the other (your connections got you in.) In any case, make sure you have more than just this.

Thanks guys! I am having a really great time here, better than I expected. I do have other extra-curriculars at school and outside of school (in which I am very involved and have a strong leadership position in).
