Hey! I'm a high school freshman in a rigorous Health Sciences Academy program in Virginia Beach, VA.
Here's the deal: My 1st and 2nd quarter grades were extremely high, so I slacked off on my exams a bit. I'm not expecting any of those exam grades to take my semester average down to a B, although these grades on exams are not promising (B's and C's). As long as I keep my semester average's at A's do I even have to worry about the exam grades? Do they show up on the transcript? Do colleges look at them? This worries me deeply because I don't want to throw away all my hard work this semester to have it affect me in the long-run.

Yes, they look at them (or they say they do), because they ask for them. also, how much are your exams worth for your semester grade overall? 25%? 13%? And if you keep your semester averages in the As you'll be in great shape, colleges usually only see your semester grades, not each individual marking period and the exam. for instance if you get a 95 1st quarter, 90 2nd quarter, and a 75 on the exam, they will only see the calculated average (depending on how much each portion is weighted).

Semester exam grades are worth 1/7 of our semester avg. Thank you for clearing this up pretty well for me. Although, if there are any people that have an extreme knowledge of the college admissions process it would be great if I can be reassured of this statement below.

"Colleges don't really care about you're semester exam grades as long as you receive an A average."

Oh yeah...the thing that makes the VA Beach school district tough is that you need a 94 for an A.

Colleges will only see what is on your official trascript. my hs only schows semester grades as A, B, C, D, or E, not minuses or pluses, no mid term grades, and no quater grades. It's a great system (for me) because i get 90-93 in all of my classes and am still one of the vals.

If your school shows midterm grades/quater grades on your transcript then you SHOULD NOT slack off on your midterms. The only way to know for sure the answer to you "Colleges dont carea bout your semester exam gradesa s long as you receive an A average" question is to ask your GC, or look at an upperclassmen's transcript to see what is on it.

Good luck.
