Do colleges (specifically UC Berkeley) take into consideration your class rank? I don't want to go into details but I had an extremely tough time due to a personal situation last semester in my sophomore year and I did terribly. This would substantially lower my class rank. Can I just leave the class rank section blank? Or would the college immediately assume that I don't rank at all? Thank you all for your help.

^ I meant my high school class rank. I am currently a junior.

Yes colleges take into consideration your class rank. UC uses rank particularly for ELC butt they will calculate it themselves based on historical data from your school.

Given that they will calculate it themselves, I think it looks disingenuous to try to conceal it. I think you should just submit it and hope they look beyond it as they say they do. This link explains what they look at and there are further links to individual UC campuses. You just are going to need to have a strong application.

Berkeley and other UCs do not care about class rank as determined by your high school.

Where class rank correlates to factors used by Berkeley and other UCs in admissions, the actual factors are based on recalculated rankings of UC admissions GPA (e.g. how Eligibility in Local Context is determined). Obviously, poor grades in sophomore year would have an adverse effect on UC admissions GPA, and how UC admissions readers will view your application in holistic reviews.

Of course, other schools differ. For example, at Texas public universities, class rank is the most important factor in admissions.

You can look at the CDS to see which schools list class rank as a factor. At UCB it is ‘not considered’ and it isn’t mentioned in the ‘How Applications are Reviewed’ link. But, gpa is and you can see that overall gpa of admitted applicants is high. But they also consider rising gpa and they also consider personal circumstance. However I think you should put it if they ask for it.
