My high school offers many clubs and I know that joining clubs is good for college admissions. However, I'm wondering if colleges would approve of certain clubs I join. For example, I like Harry Potter and my school has a Harry Potter club, would colleges disapprove of me joining the club since it doesn't have as much academic value as something like Model UN or the Science Olympiad. Another example would be that I love anime and video games, my school has both of those clubs too. Would colleges not like it if I join those clubs? Would they think I'm wasting my extra free time joining clubs where I just about TV shows or talk about/play video games for an hour? I'm curious. I aim high for colleges so I don't want to do anything that my threaten my chances.

If you’re aiming high for colleges, what they value are people who are independent thinkers, not giving a flip what others think of them.

It’s not the club that matters - it’s what you do with/in it that counts. Remember, the selective schools look for leadership and creativity along with grades/stats. So if all you’ll do in the Harry Potter club is watch the movies and exchange trivia with members, that won’t count for much. But if you do something creative and unusual with it – say, use the HP books to tutor children in their reading skills – it could make for an interesting EC.

Also, never underestimate how important it is to have some fun in high school and to make friends with common interests. Both of those clubs could provide the needed release and support from members that care about you. If you have an opportunity to make the club benefit others all the better.

I see your point, though I don’t really see what you can do with a club that talks about anime or video games which can benefit others. I could see HP but not the other two.
