Do colleges look more at classes that have to do with intended major?

Hi, I am hoping to be a Pre-law and political science major, however, my grades in many sciences and math courses have been B's. My grades in ap history and english courses have been all A's, however. Do colleges look more at that, considering my major will be in pre-law or poly sci?

I usually respond that “colleges” are not the same, but in this case I’d generalize that most will not pay much attention to a stated major, since so many students change their mind.

I think that it depends on the college, though I’d hope that most of them would consider your potential major to explain why your grades in some classes are weak compared to your other grades. It would probably make more of a difference at a school where you’re applying to a particular major or school, since that tells them a lot more than a tentative major choice. For example, I got into Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service without even taking a science class this year, and I think it helped that I was applying to that school because they knew for a fact that I wasn’t intending on going to a science field. So in general I don’t think it would make a huge difference but it could definitely be considered.
