They assume you're going to tell the truth and they can normally tell if you're lying if there are huge discrepancies between your claimed list of EC's and what your teachers and counselor write in their recommendations. <p>For the most part, colleges will take your word on EC's unless they sense something is out of kilter. Note some things such as awards or being in NHS may, depending on your high school, actually be noted on your official high school transcript and thus verification is thereby provided. Some colleges (like the UC's) have also gone to randomly choosing a number of applicants for which they investigate to verify EC's. This was adopted to deter the impulse of some to fudge.</p>
